Appraisal A determination of the value of something, such as a house. A professional qualified appraiser should make an unbiased estimate by examining the property and looking at the initial purchase price and comparing it with recent sales of similar or neighboring property. Home appraisals are used to determine worth of property for mortgages, home equity loans, estate settlements, bankruptcy and foreclosure proceedings, and insurance damages.
Appurtenance Something that, although detached, stands as part of another thing. Used often in a real estate context where an "appurtenance" may be, for example, a right-of-way over water, which is part of the legal rights of the owner of another property.
Arbitration The procedure by which a dispute may be resolved by a person who is not a judge. Arbitration is often used to limit legal costs to both parties.
